Inside Google NYC

Sean and I took a trip to Google to hear a talk about the psychology of software design, specifically when it comes to speed.

Google treats their guests well, we both loaded up with the buffet and grabbed a couple beers to kick things off. The content of the lecture was pretty basic, but good to hear. The key points were about how certain technology, namely ajax, didn't work as well until speeds could catch up with it.

Another great point was made about right clicking, quick keys, and drag n' drop. These aren't really intuitive, and only useful to those who use software for hours a day. I can see that... but I'd argue that if this functionality were made obviously apparent to users, even the casual 'once a month' users would benefit. I could go without right clicking in any event though, it feels like a design cop out. Google themselves have had a list of quick keys to use in Google Reader on the homepage, and I find them extremely useful, if not necessary.

Along with free food, drink, and perspective, I also got a Google shirt, N train!
